Last weekend I ventured down to Fota Island Resort, Cork, Ireland to recharge my batteries, sample the beautiful spa and experience some of their culinary delights.
And I can tell you, ladies, if you’re looking for a well-deserved break, then this is just what the good doctor ordered.
Who among us doesn’t love a touch of luxury? Whether its holidays, underwear or chocolate, us ladies love to indulge a little pampering.
Fota Island Resort is renowned for its extensive range of spa treatments.
It’s situated just 15 minutes outside of Cork City on the Waterford side in a luxurious setting.
I was spoiled for choice with the selection of spa treatments available. I’d been working hard all week, so the Serenity Massage sounded like the perfect tonic. And I wasn’t disappointed. I was actually drooling on the bed by the time the therapist had finished with me.
This girl literally had a master’s degree in the art of relaxation. She began the treatment by sending me into a dark relaxation room to unwind. Once my name was called, I was led into another relaxation room and placed on a massage bed where she began my treatment with a refreshing foot soak. This was followed by a full body massage which included a hot stone back massage. I could slowly feel the weight and stress of the world lifting from me. I literally felt as if I was floating after the treatment.
After the massage, I was given a luxurious Caviar facial, which is designed to hydrate and firm the skin. I can honestly say it was the best facial I’ve received — and I’ve been to quite a few spas on my travels abroad. My skin was visually smooth and clear after the treatment with a really healthy glow. I felt completely revived.
After the treatments, it was time to enjoy the delights of the hydrotherapy suite where all the bubbles massaged my entire body. If you’re fortunate enough to have a good husband or partner get them to treat you to an overnight stay at Fota.
Aside from the luxurious spa packages, the bar and restaurant are top class and a perfect way to wind down after a tough day of pampering! The dinner also didn’t disappoint.
After a fab day at the spa, I was feeling a bit peckish, so it was time to sample some of the Resort’s fine dining. After a delightful pre-dinner glass of bubbly, I sat down to a mouth-watering culinary experience.
I’m a fish lover, and the menu didn’t disappoint. For starters, I choose the fresh Kilmore Quay scallops served with white wine, garlic and served with delicious black Clonakilty pudding.
For the main course, I chose the Duck Breast Leg, which was served with red cabbage and roast potatoes. I was too full for dessert, so I ordered a revitalizing espresso.and then it was back to the bar! Again, the staff were extremely courteous and professional, ensuring the well-groomed residents’ contentment continued into the wee hours.
I’d heartily recommend a visit to Fota if you're looking to recharge the batteries and wind down for a well-deserved break.
It isn’t cheap — don’t expect to get too much change from €500 for the whole package if you’re going as a couple - but you’ll find the five-star service and atmosphere very difficult to beat anywhere else.
And before you leave Fota, especially if you’ve brought the kids along, don’t forget to pay a visit to the Wildlife Park, which is just five minutes drive from the Resort.
It’s a far nicer, and relaxed, atmosphere than Dublin Zoo and the park is home to almost 30 mammal and 50 bird species, freely roaming around in their spacious grassy habitats. Even the Cheetahs— the fastest animals on the plant — seem happy to stroll about the place, seemingly without a care in the world.
But then Fota seems to have that magic effect on every species, even the rare and restless like myself!
